About the Center

An NABH-accredited Ayurveda centre, Somatheeram Ayurveda Village is located directly on Kovalam Beach in the quiet coastal village of Chowara, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Founded by Mr. Baby Mathew in 1985, Somatheeram pioneered the concept of combining the authenticity of a traditional Ayurvedic hospital with the comfort of a holiday retreat. Over the years, the vision has grown into a group of five Ayurveda resorts across Kerala and a fleet of houseboats on Kerala's backwaters.

Ayurveda remains at the heart of the experience, with experienced Ayurvedic physicians and therapists providing personalized treatments for wellness and health concerns including allergies, joint pain, diabetes, insomnia, back pain, skin problems, obesity and stress.

The centre incorporates sustainability through traditional Kerala architecture, medicinal gardens, locally sourced ingredients and environmentally conscious practices. The resort also offers cultural experiences including traditional Kerala folk dance, classical theatre, sitar and tabla concerts, along with curated excursions to temples, palaces, backwaters and heritage sites. Excursions are subject to approval by the treating therapist so they do not interfere with the treatment programme.

Somatheeram has been named "Best Ayurvedic Centre" in Kerala ten times since 1997 and has received more than 35 international, national and state awards for Ayurveda, Yoga and wellness hospitality, including India's National Tourism Award six times and a Hall of Fame honour as India's Best Ayurvedic Resort.

Food

Food is an integral part of the Ayurvedic treatment experience at Somatheeram. The Ayurvedic menu is designed according to different doshas and body types and is developed by the in-house team of doctors based on classical Ayurvedic texts and individual treatment plans.

Guests are encouraged to follow the prescribed diet to support the benefits of their programme. During Panchakarma, dietary restrictions can be particularly strict, with meals advised in consultation with the treating physician.

An in-house dietitian monitors guests' meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner, while guests can also learn more about Ayurvedic nutrition through the resort's weekly Ayurveda cooking demonstrations conducted by its Ayurveda specialty chef.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Somatheeram is designed around the healing experience, combining traditional Kerala architecture with tropical gardens and views of the surrounding coastal landscape. Rooms include Wi-Fi, an in-room locker, double bed, telephone, western-style bathroom and hot water facilities.

Packages

Somatheeram places authentic Ayurvedic medicine at the centre of every programme. Each guest begins with a detailed consultation by an Ayurvedic physician, who assesses Prakriti, Dosha imbalance, lifestyle and medical history. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment programme is created combining therapies, herbal medicines, diet, yoga and meditation.

The programmes are all-inclusive, covering accommodation, physician consultations and examinations, daily treatments, medicines, Ayurvedic full board, yoga and meditation.

Package Exclusions
International airfare, visa fees, travel insurance, optional sightseeing and excursions, and additional treatments not prescribed within the package are excluded.

Health Insurance

Somatheeram is an NABH-certified Ayurveda hospital, and medical reimbursement through various health insurance policies may be available for eligible Ayurvedic medical care.

Guests should check directly with their insurance provider before booking to confirm the specific coverage available under their policy.

Cashless insurance is not available at the resort. Guests are required to pay upfront and subsequently submit the necessary documents for reimbursement.
