About the Center

AyurSoma is the flagship luxury property of the Somatheeram Ayurveda Group, founded by Mr. Baby Mathew in 1985. Baby Mathew pioneered the concept of the "Ayurveda Hospital in a Resort Ambience," establishing Somatheeram as the world's first Ayurveda resort. AyurSoma builds on this legacy by combining authentic, NABH-accredited Ayurvedic treatment with heritage-inspired architecture and luxury hospitality. It has also received certificate of excellence from the ‘European Audit Institute Wellness and Spa’.

The property sits atop a hillock south of Kovalam Beach, surrounded by lush greenery and with views of the Arabian Sea. At AyurSoma, the art of Ayurveda is presented by 20 well-experienced Ayurvedic doctors and 90 trained therapists across 30 treatment rooms, supported by an on-site Medicine Manufacturing Unit, Herbal Garden and Ayurveda Academy. AyurSoma also offers amenities including a swimming pool, fitness center, sauna and steam and jogging and walking paths.

One of AyurSoma's striking features is its architecture, which draws inspiration from the grandeur of traditional Kerala temples and royal palaces. Built using reclaimed timber from heritage homes, traditional laterite stone and crafted in accordance with Thachu Shastra, Kerala's ancient science of carpentry, the retreat showcases intricately carved wooden ceilings, columns, doors and balconies created by skilled local artisans.

The secluded meditation hall, which has one of its walls made of latticed wood, a remarkable part of palace design, and this forms a central segment of the property, while sloping tiled roofs, open corridors and naturally ventilated spaces ensure the design remains perfectly suited to Kerala's tropical climate.

AyurSoma integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations through rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, biogas generation, waste segregation and by growing over 2,000 medicinal plants in its herbal gardens. This along with their partnerships with the nearby tribal farming communities to ensure local employment and community development, reflect the Somatheeram Group's long-standing focus on responsible wellness tourism.

Note: AyurSoma applies a child policy, as an Ayurveda hospital and do not permit children under the age of 16, unless admission is specifically approved by the doctors.

Like its sister properties, AyurSoma is an NABH-certified Ayurveda hospital, medical reimbursement through various Health Insurance is available for Ayurvedic medical care. Please check directly with your insurer before booking to confirm coverage specifics. Cashless insurance is not available at the resort, so guest’s will need to pay upfront and file for reimbursement afterward.

The AyurUniverse team will coordinate with AyurSoma to compile and provide all the supporting documentation (medical reports, invoices, treatment summaries) guests need to submit their claims smoothly.
