Management
What is Migraine?
Migraine is a widespread, chronic disorder characterized by
episodic headache usually characterized by pain involving one side of the head.
The cause of migraine is unknown. However, it is believed to have lifestyle,
environmental and genetic factors.
Symptoms for Migraine
Migraines progress through four stages. Every stage has
different symptoms or signs. Not everyone who has migraines goes through all
stages. The four stages are as follows.
Prodrome: Just before a migraine attack,
subtle changes such as constipation, mood changes, food cravings, neck
stiffness, increased thirst and urination, frequent yawning and sleepiness are
observed which is known as prodrome.
How to Manage Migraine?
According to modern medicine system, here is no known
permanent cure for migraines however, various treatments and lifestyle changes
can effectively manage and reduce the frequency and severity of migraine
attacks.
Using the modern medical approach, migraine is treated with
over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers, migraine drugs that includes
pills, nasal sprays, or shots, anti-nausea drugs, antidepressants, antiseizure
drugs, lifestyle changes, self-care remedies etc. Although pain relievers and
migraine abortive medications can help to relieve the symptoms, long-term use
of them can lead to medication overuse and related side effects. These
headaches when not treated for root causes, may cause more complications and
affect the quality of life.
Ayurvedic Diagnosis of Migraines
According to Ayurveda, migraines are primarily caused by an
imbalance of doshas. Etiological factors such as excessive consumption of
unctuous substances, reduced consumption of liquids, irregular food habits,
intake of heavy to digest food, exposure to extreme weather conditions,
inappropriate sexual activity, withholding of natural urges, exhaustion, and
exercise are understood as the causes for vitiation of Doshas and
formation of Ama (a by-product of impaired metabolism).
Generation of Ama can disrupt the flow of energy and cause
migraines that affects the head and produces severe unilateral pain in the
neck, eyebrow, temples, ear, eye, and forehead which may impair the functions
of the eye and ear.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Migraines
In Ayurveda migraine can be called as Shirashoola in
general and Ardhavabhedaka specifically and treated according
to dosha predominance.
Ayurvedic treatment for migraines offers a natural and
holistic approach to managing and preventing these episodes of headaches. By
addressing the root causes, balancing the doshas, reducing the
generation of Ama and adopting dietary and lifestyle modifications, individuals
can find relief and significantly reduce the future migraine episodes. By
incorporating Ayurvedic principles into daily routine, one can experience
long-term relief from migraines.
