About the Center
The name Amara, meaning eternal or everlasting in Sanskrit, reflects the retreat's philosophy of creating a lasting connection between well-being, nature and responsible living. The retreat was developed with a strong emphasis on sustainable tourism and environmentally conscious design. Its founder and promoter, Mr Flemin Welben, brings extensive hospitality experience to the property.
Amara's approach is rooted in the Ayurvedic understanding that health is not simply the absence of illness but a state of balance between the body, mind, environment and lifestyle. The retreat therefore goes beyond individual treatments, incorporating healthy food, yoga, meditation, natural surroundings and lifestyle practices into the guest experience.
One of Amara's distinctive features is the way its eco-conscious philosophy extends into the architecture itself.
Amara's design blends eco-conscious architecture with the natural landscape, using rammed earth, locally sourced materials and reclaimed clay tiles to create warm, earthy spaces. Open, nature-facing areas, private sit-outs and Western Ghats views bring the outdoors into the guest experience. The retreat is surrounded by native plants, medicinal herbs, gardens and the natural landscape of the Western Ghats. The retreat also reduces plastic waste through reusable glass bottles and supports the local community through employment, local sourcing and regular free Ayurvedic medical camps.
Amara's yoga and meditation space is located on the upper floor of its distinctive round-shaped building. Open to the sky and naturally ventilated, it offers views towards the Agasthya Hills and provides a peaceful setting for yoga, pranayama and meditation at the open-air yoga and meditation centre.
The retreat combines traditional therapies with a comfortable residential experience, making it suitable for guests looking for an authentic Ayurvedic retreat without giving up modern conveniences. Its facilities include a swimming pool, sauna/steam facilities, walking paths, Wi-Fi and airport transfers.
A stay at Amara can extend beyond Ayurveda, with many opportunities to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Kerala. Guests can relax at nearby Kovalam beaches, explore local sights, enjoy Backwater excursions, art galleries and do some local shopping, giving them a glimpse into the region's traditions.
Food
Food is an integral part of the Ayurvedic experience at Amara. Guests are served an Ayurvedic diet menu, with meals designed to complement their treatment programme and support the principles of balanced living. Fresh, wholesome ingredients and Ayurvedic dietary principles form the basis of the cuisine.
Dietary guidance is adapted according to individual requirements and the Ayurvedic doctor's recommendations. The specially-curated menus are tailor-made to each dosha incorporating seasonal variations in cuisine as well as recommended style of cooking to help nourish the body while allowing the food to work in harmony with the treatments and cleansing processes.
