Obesity is characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat that can impair health. It is a medical condition where excess body fat has accumulated to the point that it may have an adverse effect on health, potentially leading to a reduced life expectancy or increased health problems. As one of the most serious public health issues of the 21st century, obesity is a leading preventable cause of death. It raises the risk of numerous physical and mental conditions, including fractures, hypertension, psychological effects, social withdrawal, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, renal failure, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Factors contributing to obesity include the consumption of foods that increase kapha, such as sweet and heavy foods, lack of physical activity, absence of exercise, afternoon naps, and a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity affects individuals of all ages but is particularly prevalent among middle-aged adults. Childhood obesity can have different causes, such as psychological factors and endocrine issues.
In Ayurveda, obesity, referred to as Sthoulya, is primarily seen as an endocrinological issue. It involves the disturbance of biological factors, the formation and accumulation of undigested nutrients, obstruction of body channels, and disrupted assimilation in the tissues, which increase the medas (fat tissue), thereby leading to obesity.
The management of Sthoulya, or obesity, involves addressing the root causes that disrupt fat metabolism. Treatment considers various factors, including hormonal imbalances and coexisting conditions like hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and hypertension. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual and include internal medications and external therapies.
The approach to treatment is multidimensional, incorporating lifestyle changes, regular exercise, and a prescribed diet. In cases where genetic factors play a role, the treatment strategy may vary according to the principles outlined in Charaka, and will be determined by a healthcare professional following a consultation.
