about center
Kalari Kovilakom is a meticulously restored 200-year-old palace in Palakkad, once served as the private wellness sanctuary of Vengunad royalty, now dedicated entirely to authentic ayurvedic medicine, carries that legacy of healing quietly in every corner.
To walk its grounds is to step into a piece of history: sun-worn stone, ancestral courtyards, and a sense of sanctuary that feels both regal and deeply personal, all wrapped in the kind of stillness that only truly old places seem to hold.
Enveloped by nature and tranquility, Kalari Kovilakom invites guests into an experience shaped as much by its surroundings as by its treatments. The palace's organic garden and Ayurvedic kitchen keep guests connected to the land, supplying the herbal medicines and sattvic meals that form part of the daily rhythm here, while yoga and meditation sessions are held with the same reverence the space has held for centuries; a continuation, not an interruption, of the palace's original purpose as a place of rest and restoration.
For guests seeking the most authentic, physician-led ayurvedic treatment experience Kerala has to offer, Kalari Kovilakom delivers it within the walls of a genuine heritage palace.
About the Center
Developed by CGH Earth Ayurveda, Kalari Kovilakom is unlike a conventional wellness resort. It functions as an authentic residential Ayurveda hospital, where every guest disconnects from everyday distractions to immerse themselves fully in the healing process. Here, classic Ayurvedic healing goes beyond treating symptoms, addressing the root cause of ailments to shape a sustainable, disease-free lifestyle.
The heritage palace offers 19 guest rooms, 12 dedicated treatment rooms, peaceful courtyards, and landscaped gardens, all designed to support recovery in a calm, nurturing environment. Combining Kerala's royal heritage with one of the country's most authentic Ayurveda programs, Kalari Kovilakom brings together traditional wisdom, clinical expertise, and disciplined living to restore balance to body, mind, and spirit.
The hospital is NABH-certified and staffed by a team of experienced Ayurvedic physicians (Vaidyas), most with 20+ years in Ayurveda Panchakarma and registered with the Kerala State Medical Council, supported by amenities including Wi-Fi, sauna/steam, an amphitheatre, a jogging/walking path, and airport transfers. In keeping with its clinical focus, only guests aged 14 and above are accepted for treatment.
As part of the CGH Earth group, a pioneer in responsible tourism in India, Kalari Kovilakom integrates sustainability into every aspect of the guest experience. The palace harvests and processes rainwater, treats and reuses wastewater from bathrooms, kitchens, and therapy rooms, and grows most of its own produce while sourcing the rest from nearby farms.
Most of the staff come from the surrounding communities, reflecting a strong commitment to local livelihoods. Beyond the palace, CGH Earth's conservation initiatives support local schools, tree-planting programmes, and wildlife protection, reinforcing their commitment to the environment and the communities that nurture it.
Food
Meals at Kalari Kovilakom are strictly vegetarian, salt-free, caffeine-free and sugar-free, prepared using the freshest ingredients from the palace's own organic garden and cooked in brass, iron, or clay vessels, a practice drawn directly from ancient Ayurvedic texts.
Every dish is customized daily under the direction of the resident Vaidyas, tailored to each guest's dosha and treatment plan, with the goal of redirecting the body's energy away from digestion and toward deeper self-healing. All guests receive 3 customized, freshly cooked meals a day, planned around their individual treatment needs.
Cultural Experiences
Since the Vengunad kings were patrons of the classical arts, especially Kathakali and Carnatic music, these traditions remain woven into daily life at Kalari Kovilakom rather than treated as separate entertainment. Guests are invited to take part in Satsang, meaning "true company," a practice that brings people together to share in discourse and reflection. This unfolds as classical music and dance performances, Kathakali, mantra chanting, candlelight meditation, and various talks on the philosophy of yoga and Ayurveda.
Kalaripayattu, one of the world's oldest martial art forms of Kerala are also held for guests, offering them a glimpse into a discipline that has long shaped the region's traditions.
Health Insurance
As an NABH-certified Ayurveda hospital, treatment programs at Kalari Kovilakom may qualify for reimbursement under private health insurance or supplementary natural-therapy plans, subject to your policy's terms. Guests are recommended to confirm their coverage directly with their insurer before booking, since cashless insurance is not available on-site and guests will need to pay upfront and file for reimbursement afterward.
The AyurUniverse team will coordinate with Kalari Kovilakom to compile and provide all the supporting documentation (medical reports, invoices, treatment summaries) guests need to submit their claims smoothly.
